Heart and Soul

As every coin has two sides, so do we as human beings. Heart and soul make a whole person. The heart is a thing, it can be measured, seen, weighed, compared, altered. The soul is a no-thing, as non-existent as honor and value and love - unseen and immeasurable........and yet of immense importance. The decisions we make, the goals we set for ourselves, our treatment of our neighbors all depend on that immeasurable unseen enterprise we call SOUL. Scientific investigation of the heart is possible. But the soul is not open to scientific methods. Those who deal strenuously with soul issues are the playwrights, the composers, the poets, the dancers, the artists who earnestly reach into that nebulous realm hoping to portray some dimension of the soul's domain. But every human being exercises his soul in his actions. Edna St.Vincent Millay rallied in an ecstatic phrase: "The soul can split the sky in two and let the face of God shine through." The human pathway to God lies in the heightened imagination that deals with the beliefs, the traditions, the moral sensitivity that determine human action. The Genesis account of the Garden of Eden states that humans can have no knowledge of good and evil. No knowledge, no scientific certainty......only venturing in faith. That is the business of the soul. Larry Gruman
